Finally back from a wonderful, exhausting trip. One of our best dinners was on our last night in Porto. The Taberna dos Mercadores is a gem. A really teeny, tiny place with only 18 seats. On a really narrow street, actually just an alley. A small room with an open kitchen. One cook, one dishwasher, one waiter and the owner. Every nook and cranny of this small place has been efficiently utilized. We saw him turn away people almost constantly. We had reserved this place almost a week before leaving. And even then, we were only able to get the earlier sitting and not the late one we wanted. They have 2 sittings per evening. We had shrimps in garlic, sea bass that is encrusted in salt and then flambeed, and the most utterly delicious octopus in rice with a lovely bottle of Douro Valley red wine. Finished with traditional Portuguese dessert and a lovely port. Great finish to our foodie trip.

I was told they were fully booked. It chanced it and was the first person to show up. There are only 8 tables & I was lucky to snag one. It specializes in Portuguese food, especially fish & seafood. Everything on the menu looked good & the staff are exceptionally friendly. In the end opted for the seafood soup & octopus rice, both sublime. Would return in a heartbeat if I were in Porto.
This was our first meal in Porto and it was a great introduction to Porto. The space is small and tight but cozy. The service was warm and professional. The food was simple, fresh and flavorful. We ordered seafood and shared a pork dish with another table. My wife saw someone get rice and octopus and wishes we had ordered that as well! Great experience!
